HERO DOWN: Wichita Police K9 Rooster Murdered In The Line Of Duty
Wichita, Kansas – K9 Rooster of the Wichita Police Department laid down his life in the line of duty on Saturday, March 18, after an encounter with a suicidal man.
According to KSN, officers responded to a disturbance at the Lamplighter mobile home park in the 2300 block of East MacArthur just after 8 PM on Saturday. Upon arrival, they came into contact with an individual coming out of a home with a firearm. The suspect then tried to go back in to the residence.
WPD officers released K9 Rooster in an attempt to apprehend the individual. The suspect began firing at officers, striking the K9 hero.
Officers returned fire, striking the man. He was transported to an area hospital and later died from his injuries.
“We are all definitely mourning the loss of one of our own tonight,” said Sgt. Nikki Woodrow of the Wichita Police Department. “No human officers were injured so thank goodness, and the suspect was unfortunately shot and pronounced as well.”
Rooster died died at the scene from his injuries. He was a 5 year veteran of the department.
The other individual involved in the original disturbance is cooperating with police.
