VIDEO: NYPD Sergeant Rushes, Tases Knife-Wielding Man Inside Police Station

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan praised Sgt. Michael Thomas for ending the situation quickly and safely.

Bronx, NY – A man armed with a knife burst into the Mott Haven precinct and threatened to kill himself before he was tased by a quick-thinking police officer (video below).

The incident occurred at the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) 40th Precinct station in the early morning hours of Nov. 3, according to the New York Post.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan posted a 14-second clip of the encounter on Twitter the following morning.

The video, which did not have sound, showed the man as he walked into the station with a silver knife gripped in his right hand.

He appeared to be maneuvering the pointed end towards his abdomen when he suddenly lost his hold.

The knife tumbled to the ground, but as the man reached down to retrieve it, NYPD Sergeant Michael Thomas approached him from behind with a Taser.

Although the man managed to pick the knife back up, he didn’t have time to do anything else before the Taser was deployed, the video showed.

As he collapsed to the ground, at least five officers swarmed him and took him into custody.

“The first thing that went into my mind, this individual need help. We are here to help people,” Sgt. Thomas said, according to the New York Post. “I feel very grateful I was able to help someone with a mental crisis.”

Chief Monahan praised the officers for handling the situation quickly and safely.

“Our cops make split-second decisions every day. When an emotionally disturbed man armed with a knife walked into the @NYPD40Pct, these officers acted quickly,” Chief Monahan said in the tweet. “Never hesitating and prepared for anything, they utilized a taser — ensuring a safe outcome for everyone. Well done!”

The suicidal man was transported to Lincoln Hospital, and has not been charged with any offenses in connection with the incident, according to the New York Post.

He has been arrested on two prior occasions this year for similar encounters, police said.
