Streetsboro, OH – Streetsboro police have arrested four armed teens who barged into a Verizon store and robbed an employee at gunpoint (video below).
The incident occurred at the Verizon store on Route 14 just before 10:30 a.m. on July 17, after a witness saw four teens with their faces covered out in the parking lot, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.
The witness immediately called 911, and told the dispatcher that at least one of the suspects appeared to be holding a gun.
“The Verizon’s getting robbed!” he said.
Surveillance footage showed the armed teens as they burst into the store and ran towards a back room.
A suspect wearing a red hooded sweatshirt then shoved a store employee to the ground, held a gun to his head, and demanded that he open the store’s safe, WOIO reported.
While three of the robbers rummaged around the office area, the fourth attacker bound the employee’s hands behind his back, the video showed.
The attackers cleared out the register and stole other items from the store, WOIO reported.
But the would-be heist was disrupted within three minutes, when police arrived at the front door just as two of the robbers were walking out of the back room area, Streetsboro Police Chief Darin Powers told the news outlet.
The employee – who was still bound – took the opportunity to run out the front of the store, security footage showed.
Bodycam footage showed the officers as they ordered the suspects to show their hands and get onto the ground.
Two of the would-be robbers complied, and were taken into custody on the floor of the store showroom.
Officers then made their way to the back room, where one suspect was found hiding inside what appeared to be a closet.
The teen in the red hooded sweatshirt was found curled up under a desk nearby.
Investigators recovered one handgun at the scene.
“The good thing about this incident is there’s no back door in Verizon so we only had to cover one door,” Chief Powers told WOIO. “Our officers responded very calmly, took these gentlemen into custody without anyone hurt, without suspects getting hurt, and we’re very fortunate the clerk wasn’t hurt as well.”
All four juveniles were charged with kidnapping and aggravated robbery with a gun.
