VIDEO: High School Shooter Identified – Posted Video Staging Shootout With Friend
Caleb Sharpe Identified As School Shooter
Spokane County, WA – The Freeman High School shooter has been identified as Caleb Sharpe, a sophomore at the school, according to Heavy.com.
A video was posted online in May which shows Sharpe in a staged for YouTube gunfight where he “kills” his friend over video games (video below.)
The incident happened Wednesday morning. Caleb Sharpe opened fire in Freeman High School before his gun jammed.
While the gun was jammed, a student walked up to him to try to talk him out of what he was doing.
“It sounds like he tried to walk up and tell him, ‘I’m not, this isn’t what you want to do’,” Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said.
A parent told KING5 that the student was “best friends” with Sharpe.
Sharpe didn’t listen, and instead pulled out another gun and fatally shot that student.
“He then fired more rounds down the hallway, striking three more students and those students are in the hospital right now in serious condition,” the sheriff said.
Sheriff Knezovich didn’t go into many details, but said that a brave staff member stopped Sharpe and had him under control when the first officers arrived on scene.
“This is another example of somebody that had a lot of courage, stepped up and stopped this before it got worse,” he said. “These are senseless and tragic events that really don’t need to happen and I don’t understand them.
“I don’t think anybody can make any sense out of this but we need to figure out what’s gone wrong with our society that our children decide that they need to take weapons to deal with the issues they’re facing.”
Cheryl Moser, the mother of a freshman at Freeman told The Spokesman, “He called me and said, “Mom there are gunshots.” He sounded so scared. I’ve never heard him like that… You never think about something happening like this at a small school.”
“My daughter actually called me because she was out at her car and she heard gunshots,” said Rondielle Frye. She says that she told he daughter to run.
The sheriff said that it appeared that ongoing bullying was the motive for the shooting.
The Associated Press reports that Michael Harper, a 15-year-old sophomore who went to school with Sharpe, said that Sharpe had brought notes to school at the start of the school year saying that he would do “something stupid” and might get killed or jailed.
He was reported to counselors but it’s not clear at this time how they responded.
Harper said that Sharpe wasn’t bullied, and had lots of friends, but was obsessed with school shootings.
Caleb Sharpe is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility.
