Miami Police Officer Rene Banegas Killed In Collision Off-Duty

Southwest Miami-Dade, FL – An off-duty City of Miami Police Department officer, Rene Banegas, was killed Saturday in a traffic collision near Southwest 34th Street and 87th Avenue.

According to police sources, Officer Banegas was driving his personal vehicle and lost control, hit a tree, and then crashed into a house.  Miami-Dade Rescue responded and Officer Banegas was pronounced dead at the scene.  There was minimal damage to the residence and none of the occupants were hurt.  Investigators were on scene for most of the night trying to determine what had happened. Speed is believed to be a significant factor in the collision.

One of the home’s residents, Eduardo Cardeno, said that he was sleeping when the accident occurred.  Per news sources, his wife, Maria Batista, said “the loud crash startled them” and that they quickly got out of the house.  Both said the officer’s car was destroyed, that he was trapped in the car, and that they tried to help him.

According to news sources, local Fraternal Order of Police President Javier Ortiz said that  “our prayers are with him and that the FOP had met with the fallen officer’s family this morning.”

According to news sources, City of Miami Police Officer Banegas’ father said that “his son had studied criminology at Florida International University before going to the police academy.”  Officer Banegas, age 27, had always wanted to be in law enforcement.   He was born in New Jersey and is survived by his parents, brother and sister in New Jersey, a brother in Honduras and his fiancee.  Many family members responded to the scene of the accident to see for themselves.  His father also said that “it is an irreparable loss,” and that he had no words to describe this.

Miami-Dade police are continuing to investigate the collision.

We send our condolences to Officer Banegas’ family and blue family in their loss.
