Officer Andy Rodriguez Narrowly Escapes Death

El Paso, TX – A drunk driver struck El Paso Police Officer Andy Rodriguez while performing a sobriety test Friday morning at approximately 3 o’clock a.m..

Officer Andy Rodriguez, of the El Paso Police Department, was struck by one of the drivers involved in an earlier accident.

The incident took place in the vicinity of 11200 Montana Avenue.

Officer Rodriguez’s dash-cam recorded the 2009 Nissan Cube, driven by Sherry Lorraine Rodriguez, as it careened in the direction of both the Officer and another suspect.

There was another unidentified person in the vehicle with Ms. Rodriguez, according to the complaint affidavit.
Officer Rodriguez heroically pushed the drunk-driving suspect out of harm’s way, as seen in the dash-cam video. At this time the woman driving the Cube crashed into the Officer’s patrol car, which then struck Officer Rodriguez. The impact threw Officer Rodriguez “violently” into the air before hitting the ground.

The Officer was taken to Del Sol Hospital for treatment. He sustained minor injuries during the incident and was released shortly thereafter.

Sherry Rodriguez told investigating Officers she drank a few beers at Maverick’s bar prior to the crash but insisted she had been hit by another vehicle which caused her to lose control of hers.

One of the Investigators stated that Ms. Rodriguez smelled of alcohol.

Both Sherry Rodriguez and the unidentified man Officer Rodriguez was conducting the sobriety test on, were uninjured during the event. Both were arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Ms. Rodriguez was later released on $2,500 cash or surety bond.
