Windham, NH – The 15-year-old son of a firefighter wearing a Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat outside a polling location on primary day was attacked by a man who went on to fight with adults that tried to stop him.
The incident occurred at about 6:12 p.m. on Feb. 11 outside the polls set up at Windham High School for the Democrat primary, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.
Police said that 34-year-old Patrick Bradley was leaving the polls when he passed a tent of President Donald Trump supporters, WBZ reported.
Prosecutors told a judge on Friday that a 15-year-old boy wearing a MAGA hat said “Goodbye, sir, have a nice night!” to the man as he passed, and Bradley snapped.
Police said Bradley slapped the teenager and then, when two adults tried to intervene, he assaulted them too, WBZ reported.
Bradley has also been accused of trying to knock over the tent and throwing Trump campaign signs.
The 15-year-old boy’s mother, Cathy Campbell, told FOX News that she was horrified by what happened.
“My son stayed home from school on Tuesday for a doctor’s appointment and we drove by the high school to go vote,” Campbell explained. “When we got there, we saw Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle, and my son was over the moon. My son is the most patriotic kid you’d ever meet in your life.”
She said her son was asked to help hold signs at the Trump tent later that day and she dropped him off to volunteer wearing his MAGA hat, FOX News reported.
“I was apprehensive about him wearing the MAGA hat, because we know it can provoke and we know people don’t like Trump,” Campbell said. “But he wore the hat because he’s a proud 15 year old and he doesn’t know what people are going to be like.”
“My son was standing outside on the sidewalk and he said ‘have a nice night,’ he said it to everyone. But this man was triggered,” she explained. “He said ‘f–k you’ to him and wound up his hand as fast as he could and slapped him across the face.”
Campbell told FOX News that another man wearing a MAGA hat came to her son’s aid and ended up with a fractured jaw.
“He’s the sweetest kid,” she added. “He was so excited and not realizing that something like this could happen.”
Campbell said her husband is a firefighter in their town and was on duty when the incident occurred, FOX News reported.
“He got the call about the assault and didn’t know it was our son until he got there,” Campbell said.
Bradley was arrested on Feb. 13 in connection with the attack, WBZ reported.
He apologized to the judge in court on Valentine’s Day and claimed he had let his emotions take over.
Bradley, who has two prior convictions for simple assault and reckless conduct, was on probation when he launched his unprovoked attack on the teen, according to WBZ.
He has been charged with three counts of simple assault and one count of disorderly conduct, plus a probation violation.
Bradley was held in lieu of a $5,000 cash-only bail at the Rockingham County Jail, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.
There was also an administrative hold placed on him for the probation violations.
