Domestic Abuser Attacks Cop Trying To Arrest Him, Then Victim Grabs His Baton And Unleashes Her Fury
Kanon Charbonneau’s Victim Helped In His Arrest
Coeur d’Alene, ID – A Kootenai County deputy was attacked by a domestic abuser whom he was attempting to arrest. When things got ugly, the abuser’s victim grabbed the deputy’s baton and helped beat the suspect into custody.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, August 6, near the Hagadone Marina and Cedars Floating Restaurant, according to KXLY. The deputy had responded to a report of a female being assaulted and dragged into a vehicle. Upon arrival, he found the suspect, Kanon Charbonneau, trying to leave in his car.
The victim, who was inside Charbonneau’s car, got out and ran to the unidentified deputy’s cruiser when her attacker stopped his vehicle. Her injuries were obvious, and the deputy began arresting Charbonneau, who immediately head-butted him in the face. Charbonneau then began fighting the deputy to the ground.
The victim, who was not identified, saw the deputy being attacked by her attacker, so she grabbed the deputy’s PR-24 baton from his vehicle. She then rushed to help the deputy, and struck Charbonneau several times. Working together, the deputy and the victim took Charbonneau into custody.
Kootenai deputies conducted an investigation, and concluded that ‘he had punched the victim in the face, attempted to strangle her, destroyed her personal property, and forced her into his vehicle against her will.’
Charbonneau was charged with felony domestic battery, attempted strangulation, grand theft, battery on a peace officer, 2nd degree kidnapping, DUI, malicious injury to property, and destruction of a telecommunications device.
The victim was transported to Kootenai Health for ‘significant’ injuries to her face. The deputy was also injured, and transported to Kootenai Health. Both are expected to recover fully.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said, “Due to her help, the deputy was able to gain control of Charbonneau and take him into custody.”
