Hero Down: Rutland Police Det. John Songy Succumbs To COVID-19

Rutland, MA – Rutland Police Department (RPD) Detective John Songy died on May 29, following “a courageous and well-fought battle” against COVID-19, according to his department.

The 48-year-old detective battled the novel coronavirus for weeks and was on a ventilator in critical condition at Saint Vincent Hospital when he passed away, The Republican reported.

Det. Songy joined the RPD in 2012, after serving the Oakham Police Department for many years.

“He was the kind of guy that did the right thing simply because it was the right thing to do,” RPD Chief Nicholas Monaco said during the veteran officer’s funeral service on June 4, according to The Republican. “That was the kind of guy John was.”

Chief Monaco said that the highly-decorated detective “had a heart of gold” and was known as a person who “would do anything for anybody,” according to his obituary.

“John cared about everyone he met and passionately dedicated his life to keeping others safe,” the tribute read. “He fell in love with his community and they fell in love with him.”

Det. Songy leaves behind his wife, Joanne, as well as his daughter, Katelyn, his stepdaughter, Shantell, and his stepson DeVante.

He is also survived by his parents, grandfather, sister, grandson, and two nephews.

“We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to Detective Songy’s family during this difficult time and we would like to thank the community for the generous outpouring of support that John, his family and the department have received throughout this ordeal,” the RPD said in a Facebook post on May 29.

Det. Songy was laid to rest on June 4, according to his obituary.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Rutland Police Department Detective John Songy, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
