Hero Down: Melrose Park Officer Joseph ‘Joe’ Cappello Succumbs To Coronavirus

Melrose Park Police Department Officer Joseph "Joe" Cappello passed away on April 24.

Melrose Park, IL – Melrose Park Police Department (MRPD) Officer Joseph “Joe” Cappello died on April 24, following a battle against COVID-19.

The 55-year-old officer fought the novel coronavirus for weeks, WLS reported.

“He had a rough period of time in the ICU, [then] started making a comeback,” Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico said. “He got out and then for some reason he succumbed to it.”

Officer Cappello served the Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) for 27 years prior to joining the MRPD, WLS reported.

“We are saddened to learn about the passing of Melrose Park Police Officer Joseph Cappello,” the CCSO said in a statement.

He served in the CCSO’s court services unit and evictions unit from 1989 until his retirement in 2016.

“Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones, and his former colleagues in this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said.

The MRPD said that Officer Cappello was an important part of their agency who will be deeply missed, WLS reported.

“Always dependable and trustworthy, Officer Cappello worked hard to build relationships in the community,” the MRPD said in a statement. “He served the people of Melrose Park with integrity and will be remembered as a dedicated public servant.”

Officer Cappello’s father is a retired Chicago police officer, and his son now serves with the Chicago Police Department, Serpico told WLS.

South Chicago Heights Police Officer John Darge said that Officer Cappello was genuine in his interactions with others, WMAQ reported.

“Joe was true grit, a true brother and a true friend to so many people,” Officer Darge said. “Earth lost a warrior, brother and friend but heaven gained an angel, so we just pray for his wife and his son and continue to carry on Joe’s legacy and memory.”

Officer Cappello was laid to rest on April 29, WLS reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Melrose Park Police Department Officer Joseph “Joe” Cappello, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
