Hero Down: LAPD Officer Esmeralda Ramirez Dies Of Injuries Caused By 2015 Crash

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Esmeralda Ramirez died in the line of duty on Sunday.

Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Officer Esmeralda Ramirez died in the line of duty on Sunday, after undergoing surgery for injuries she sustained at work.

Officer Ramirez, 49, was severely injured when a vehicle slammed into her patrol car in 2015, the Los Angeles Times reported.

She recently underwent surgery to help repair those injuries, but subsequently suffered complications that led to her death.

LAPD Chief Michel Moore said he just visited with Officer Ramirez at the hospital last week.

She was surrounded by her friends and family members when she passed away, he said.

“Everyone is devastated in the Pacific Division,” Chief Moore told the Los Angeles Times.

Officer Ramirez joined the LAPD in 2008, and worked a variety of assignments during her time with the Pacific Division, the department said in a news release.

“Her commitment to her follow officers and this Department is only eclipsed by the love she had for her family,” the agency said. “Her death is a reminder of the potentially life altering and tragic events that an officer faces every day they come to work.”

“Officer Esmeralda Ramirez served the city of Los Angeles with honor, integrity, and pride,” Chief Moore tweeted on Tuesday. “We will, not as an organization but as a family, never forget her sacrifice.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom extended his condolences for the loss of the veteran officer in a statement on Tuesday.

“Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Officer Ramirez,” Newsom’s statement read. “On behalf of all Californians, we offer our heartfelt sympathy to her family, friends and colleagues.”

“Officer Ramirez’s dedicated service to the people of Los Angeles will never be forgotten,” the governor added.

Officer Ramirez leaves behind three adult children, according to her department.

She will be laid to rest on Wednesday, LAPD Pacific tweeted.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Los Angeles Police Department Officer Esmeralda Ramirez, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
