Ann Arbor, MI – Alpena Police Department (APD) Officer Lee Grant died on March 15 due to surgical complications associated with kidney cancer.
Officer Grant, 44, was diagnosed with kidney cancer on Dec. 4, 2019, according to a fundraising page established to help his family in the wake of their sudden loss.
On the same day of his diagnosis, doctors discovered that Officer Grant was also suffering from a hernia.
The veteran officer underwent surgery to remove 20 percent of one of his kidneys in early February.
On March 5, he underwent another surgery to address the hernia.
But approximately one week later, complications arose that resulted in Officer Grant being raced into emergency surgery. He was subsequently admitted into the intensive care unit and placed in a medically-induced coma.
Officer Lee succumbed to his medical complications on March 15.
The longtime Alpena resident served as an Alcona Sheriff’s Department deputy before he joined APD 19 years ago, according to his obituary.
He was very involved in his local community, where he coached various youth sports and served as a board member with multiple organizations, The Alpena News reported.
“His life was spent giving back to the community,” Alpena Police Department Lieutenant Eric Hamp told the paper. “Lee had a huge heart and was a very giving guy.”
APD Sergeant Don Leaym said that Officer Grant was focused on his family and on enjoying life.
“Some of us work as much as we can and miss out on family time,” Sgt. Leaym explained, according to The Alpena News. “Lee was different and did everything he could to be involved with his family and always kept his family’s best interest in mind.”
“Lee had a heart of gold,” he continued. “He wasn’t just a coworker, he was a great friend to me and I will miss him dearly. My heart goes out to his wife and children.”
Officer Grant leaves behind his wife, Barb, as well as his children, Emma, Blake, and Wyatt, according to his obituary.
He is also survived by his sister, Michelle, his brother-in-law, Joe, and many nieces and nephews.
Officer Grant was laid to rest on March 20.
