Corporal Monty Platt Dies
Canyon, TX – West Texas A&M University Police Corporal Monty Platt died from an animal bite on Tuesday, August 8.
The incident occurred on July 24 on campus in the area of 301 26th Street, when Corporal Platt responded to a call about a feral cat. He was bitten by the feral cat when he tried to capture it, according to NewsChannel 10. The cat bit him through his work gloves and punctured the skin, according to Officer Down Memorial Page.
On Thursday, August 3, Corporal Platt was not feeling well, and was taken to a local urgent care center. From there, he was admitted to the ICU at University Medical Center in Lubbock. Corporal Platt was given medication to prevent an infection from the cat bite, and had a severe allergic reaction to that medication.
He was transferred to the Burn Unit at UMC. When he arrived, he was heavily sedated and put on a ventilator, and treated for the animal bite. On Tuesday evening, Corporal Platt’s condition ‘rapidly deteriorated’, and he died.
In a Facebook post, the WTAAU PD said:
“It is with a heavy heart and great sorrow that the University Police Department at WTAMU announces the loss of an officer. Corporal Monty D. Platt passed away last evening at the University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
The death of Corporal Monty Platt was a result of medical complications from being bitten by a feral cat while on duty, responding to a police call. Corporal Platt had served with the University Police Department since 1996.
Corporal Platt was bitten by a feral cat while responding to a call on campus two weeks ago. Last Thursday he was not feeling well, and was taken to an urgent care center with a severe reaction to medication prescribed to prevent infections from the cat bite.
Corporal Platt was admitted to ICU on Thursday Evening. Friday morning he was transferred to the burn unit at UMC in Lubbock, because the injuries suffered from the medication were so severe. He was heavily sedated, placed on a ventilator, and treated for the wounds.
Last evening his kidneys shut down and his blood temperature dropped. Later in the evening he passed at UMC.
Corporal Platt’s arrangements are being handled by the Brooks Funeral Directors in Canyon. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:00am on Friday, August 11th, at the St. Ann’s Church at 605 38th St, in Canyon; followed by a graveside memorial at the Dreamland Cemetery Association at 26500 U.S. 87 in Canyon.
Campus Law Enforcement lost a great officer in Corporal Monty D. Platt. All of us at the University Police Department extend our prayers to the family during this difficult time.”
Corporal Platt had served with the West Texas A&M University Police Department since 1996. He had served as a law enforcement officer for 24 years.
He is survived by his wife, son, and mother.
