California Deli Owner Offered Free Food To People Who Said, ‘Send Her Back’

A California deli owner offered a free side meal to any customers who said, 'Send her back'

Clayton, CA – A California deli owner offered a free side meal to customers who said, “Send her back,” a reference to a chant made by people attending a recent President Donald Trump rally.

According to the Washington Post, John Canesa owns Canesa’s Brooklyn Heros and posted on Facebook on July 19: “Meatballs made with beef today incase [sic] we offend any of our overly sensitive pork haters!! Free side when you say send her back! #canesasbrooklynheroes.”

After Canesa says he received threats, the posts were either removed or made private, according to the Washington Post.

Customers were lining up at the restaurant to show their support for Canesa’s business, the Washington Post reported.

Canesa responded to one commenter that he had given away 65 free side meals, according to Yahoo.

“Come and get it we are about to sell out,” Canesa wrote, according to Yahoo. “I have to post more often!”

Tuija Catalano, the mayor of Clayton, condemned Canesa on her own Facebook page.

According to Yahoo, Catalano posted on Facebook: “I am very saddened to have seen a FB post by the owner of local deli this morning. We all have rights to our own political, religious, and other opinions. We all have a right to post about them too. However, there is no place in our community for hatred and bigotry. When hateful comments are being promoted as part of a local business, they reflect on our community’s reputation. As an elected official, who is also a woman and foreign-born, I personally find a comment about sending anyone back over their political opinions unacceptable.”

KTVU reporter Sara Zendehnam posted on Twitter that the restaurant was closed July 20 and that Canesa told her that he’s a father of three children and has to deal with threats after the post was made.
