Sheffield Lake, OH – A SWAT officer was shot Thursday night while attempting to apprehend a fugitive wanted on weapons charges.
The incident started with officers monitoring the residence since 10 a.m. Thursday, according to Cleveland.com.
Officers knocked at 3 p.m. but there was no answer.
At around 8:30 p.m., SWAT made entry with two warrants, and the suspect opened fire on them.
A Sheffield Lake SWAT officer was shot in the gunfight. Officers returned fire, but it’s unknown if the suspect was hit.
The officer has been airlifted to MetroHealth Medical Center. His condition has not been released, but WJW reporter Peggy Gallek reports that the officer is expected to be “OK.”
WEWS reporter Amanda VanAllen reports that the fugitive is a former corrections officer.
