President Obama Appoints Debo Adegbile, Attorney For Cop Killer, To Civil Rights Commission

Washington, DC –   In a final parting shot against police officers, President Obama has recently nominated Debo Adegbile for a six-year term to the United States Commission on Civil Rights.  In 2014, the President nominated Adegbile to chair the U.S. Justice Department Civil Rights Division.  The 2014 nomination required Senate approval and was denied.  The current nomination is an appointment by the President and does not require Senate approval. President Obama’s appointment is sparking justifiable outrage throughout the country.

Who is Debo Adegbile?  He is a top attorney for cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal.  Fallen Hero Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel J. Faulkner, age 25,  was shot and killed on December 9, 1981, by Abu Jamal.  Fallen Hero Officer Faulkner had made what appeared to be a routine traffic stop, for a vehicle driving the wrong way down a one-way street.  He had the driver exit the vehicle.  Once out of the vehicle, the driver hit Officer Faulkner in the face, and Officer Faulkner hit him back.  As Philadelphia Officer Faulkner fought with the driver and attempted to take him into custody, the driver’s brother came running across the street.  The driver’s brother, Abu Jamal, shot Fallen Hero Officer Faulkner in the back four times.  Officer Faulkner fell to the ground but was able to return fire and wound Abu Jamal, who then stood over the fallen Officer and shot him again in the face.   Abu Jamal tried to flee but fell to the ground, near the mortally-wounded Officer.

Abu Jamal, who was a member of the Black Panthers, survived his wound and was charged with 1st degree Murder. He was convicted of murder in two separate trials.  In December, 2001, a federal judge overturned his death sentence and ordered a new sentencing hearing.  In December, 2011, the District Attorney dropped a request for a new sentencing hearing and Abu Jamal’s sentence was converted to life in prison without parole.  In March, 2012, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected Abu Jama;’s request to overturn his life sentence.  Adegbile played a key part in each of these court procedures, not only representing Abu Jamal but also assisting him financially.

According to news sources, this appointment has been met with “harsh criticism” from Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, who said in a statement issued on Friday December 16, 2016, that Adegbile’s appointment “is a slap in the face to every law enforcement officer in America.”.  Sen. Toomey also said that a majority of the Senate had agreed in 2014 that Adegbile “was not fit to represent the people of the United States in enforcing Americans’ civil rights.” He went on to say that “Mr. Adegbile did not simply defend a client.  He supervised an effort to lionize unrepentant cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal, who cold-bloodedly murdered Philadelphia police officer Danny Faulkner 35 years ago.” Sen. Toomey continued in his statement and said “Mr. Adegbile supervised the effort to spread misinformation about the trial and evidence, fabricate claims of racism, malign Philly police, and organize rallies across the globe that portrayed this brutal cop-killer as the victim.”  Sen. Toomey called on President Obama to withdraw the nomination.

John McNesby, President of the Philadelphia chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, called the President’s nomination “Obama’s goodbye present to police across the nation.”  He also said the nomination was a “kick in the teeth to the cops.”   FOP President McNesby said  “I don’t know whether he can be un-appointed but that will be one of our first orders of business when we go down and meet with the new administration in January.  I don’t know whether that can be done, but we are sure as hell going to try.”  He guaranteed that Philadelphia FOP members will be outraged when they hear about President Obama’s appointment, and raised the possibility that “the incoming Trump administration could shut down funding to the Commission on Civil Rights over the appointment.”

Sam Cabral, President of The International Union of Police Associations, a member organization of the AFL-CIO, said he and his organization condemned the appointment, and that “President Obama has, once again, gone out of his way to demonstrate his utter disdain for our nation’s law enforcement officers.”  He said that Adegbile had gone out of his way to “spread lies, spouted racism, and maligned the Philadelphia police in his failed efforts to overcome justice and portray this vicious murderer as, somehow, the victim.”

When Adegbile’s nomination was brought before the Senate in 2014, seven Democrats joined with Senate Republicans to block the nomination by a vote of 52 – 47,  after concerns were raised about Adegbile’s role in Abu Jamal’s defense.  And what happened to Abu-Jamal Mumia?  He speaks from prison as a political activist, has a web site dedicated to securing his freedom, has written books and commentaries on on social and political issues. and continues to spew lies, racism, and hatred.  He has become a media darling, the hero of activists, liberals, and celebrities.  He continues to live his life, actually quite well, from a prison cell.

And what of Daniel Faulkner’s widow, Maureen, and his legacy?  Fallen Hero Officer Faulkner was a U.S. Army veteran and a veteran Philadelphia PD Officer.    He had also served with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.  Maureen Faulkner wrote a book in 2007, Murdered by Mumia – A Life Sentence of Loss, Pain, and Injustice.  She has been the outspoken voice for her husband Danny during the numerous hearings, trials, and court procedures involving Abu Jamal.

We are outraged by President Obama’s appointment of Adegbile to this position, an irony in and of itself.  The President’s legacy has been one of war on police officers, and perpetuation of lies furthering division between police and citizens within this country.  Line of duty deaths for police officers have increased 15 percent this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.  This nomination/appointment is an insult to Fallen Hero Officer Danny Faulkner, Maureen Faulkner, Fallen Hero Officer Faulkner’s family, the Philadelphia Police Department, and every law enforcement officer in this country, past, present, and future.  It is a travesty and an injustice.  We hope you are as outraged as we are and ask you to write your political leaders and to demand that President Obama withdraw the appointment.  We ask if President Obama refuses, that you write and ask President-Elect Trump to overturn the nomination/appointment.  The only nomination Adegbile should be given is life in prison, for what he did to Danny Faulkner, his widow Maureen, and Officer Faulkner’s blue family.  Shame on you, President Obama.
