Orlando, FL – Orange County Deputy Norman Lewis was killed Monday, January 9, 2017, while responding to assist fallen Hero Orlando Police Master Sgt. Debra Clayton.  He was described as a “gentle giant.”

Orange County Deputy First Class Norman Lewis was killed after he struck the side of a van that turned in front of him.  The crash took place just hours after Master Sergeant Debra Clayton was gunned down while attempting to confront murder suspect Markeith Loyd.  Deputy Lewis was working the perimeter of the search for Loyd around 9:43 AM, when a 78-year old driver traveling north on Pine Hills Road turned directly in to the path of the officer, who was traveling south.

The 35-year old officer was ejected from his 2014 Harley Davidson and was critically injured.  The crash happened on Pine Hills Road and Balboa Drive at about 9:43 AM.  “Based on eyewitness testimony, he had a green light and he was not traveling at any inordinate rate of speed,” said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.  Florida Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

OC Motorcycle Deputy Norman Lewis was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.  He is an 11-year veteran of The Orange County Sheriff’s Office.  Deputy First Class Lewis was a graduate of the University of Central Florida.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 2004, according to WFTV9. He played for the UCF football team as an offensive lineman from 2000 – 2003.  The driver of the van was not hurt in the accident and charges are pending.

Ten minutes after the initial crash involving Deputy Lewis, Orlando Police officer Robert Castro was involved in a crash approximately 200 yards away.  The crash sent him to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Orlando Police Chief John Mina.
