Officer Fired For Having Confederate Flag At House

In what appears to be an over-reaction by department administrators, Roswell Police Department Sergeant Sylvia Cotriss was fired for having a confederate flag at her house. Cotriss said that she was unaware of the controversy surrounding the flag, and that she would immediately get rid of it. That wasn’t good enough for Chief Rusty Grant, who fired Cotriss, a 20-year veteran of the Roswell Police Department.

“If I knew it offended someone, my friends, my family, I wouldn’t do it,” Sergeant Cotriss told the AJC. “Police officers have to adjust a lot of things in our lives, and for 20 years my whole life has been about making change and being held to a higher standard. We take an oath to help and protect people, so we can’t have a private life that’s really bad.”

Sergeant Cotriss’ response is in stark contrast to the South Carolina Officer who was fired for wearing confederate flag underwear. In that case the officer posted a picture of himself on Facebook wearing confederate flag underwear. When confronted about the picture, that officer said that the photo was no different than the assistant chief posing with Black Lives Matter activists.

The confederate flag is considered by many to be a symbol of black oppression, but a large group of Americans view it as a symbol of southern pride. Country Singer Braid Paisley worked with LL Cool J about a song that addresses the issue. In the “Accidental Racist” song, Paisley tries to explain wearing the confederate flag to a black man:

Use of the confederate flag became more controversial after Dylan Roof fatally shot 9 black worshipers in a church. Roof used the flag as a symbol white supremacy or hatred of black people.

The Roswell Police Department can, and should, prohibit officers from flying the confederate flag. However, the issue at hand is that they didn’t specifically prohibit it before firing Sergeant Cotriss; they just prohibit conduct that makes the department look bad. It’s reasonable to believe that she did not know that there was a problem with the flag, and when notified, she offered to immediately correct the situation. This whole situation could have been handled without her losing her job.

Good first sue their PC butts for alot of cash second put the flag in your yard

  • Leonard_Wood

Just plain wrong. The confederate flag is NOT a symbol of hatred toward anyone.

    • Dennisinlexky

Wow! Get your head out of your ass, it’s been that way since the Civil War and still is.

      • Leonard_Wood

Right back at you! Some bad people have adopted the flag, but that is not what the flag really represents. And it never has.

        • Bigjoe275

Then please explain to us why did the Confederate states. With the confederate flags wage a war to KEEP slavery? So yes to blacks in america it does represent hatred and oppression to all blacks in this country. Remember blacks were not FREE in southern confederate states.

          • Anthony Bilodeau

If you think that is why the confederate states waged war you need to open a book. Slavery was a huge part of their culture as much as reliance on fossil fuels is ours. Lincoln wasnt even on southern ballots yet somehow managed to win the 1861 election. The south realized they were not correctly recognized and believed they had a constitutional right to leave the union. People seem to forget that blacms make up less than 5% of slavery that has ever existed, and less than a third in America. There were 3 times more Irish slaves for a black slave until black slaves became cheaper. To say a flag represents anything other than a common comrade of states believing that they need to look out for themselves is foolish.

During the American Civil War, the Confederate States of America consisted of the governments of 11 Southern states that seceded from the Union in 1860-61, carrying on all the affairs of a separate government and conducting a major war until defeated in the spring of 1865. Convinced that their way of life, based on slavery, was irretrievably threatened by the election of President Abraham

See what Anthony said.. No repetition needed..

When they went into her house did they have a search warrant?? Were they looking for a FLAG or just a REASON to FIRE her?? I think they wanted gone so they didn’t have to pay her RETIREMENT!!!!!

Most people just assume that the confederate flag represents slavery – it doesn’t. At the peak of slavery only 6% of Americans in the south owned slaves, with 1.6% in the north. It represents the people’s right to succeed from the union which was denied them by dishonest abe and the union. Half a million people uselessly died in the civil war when every other country on earth managed to abolish slavery through peaceful means. What’s worse is that slavery would have died out much quicker had the south lawfully been allowed to succeed. Once they left the union, the north would no longer be able be obligated to return slaves to the south, which would have made the north a safe haven for runaway slaves, the costs of protecting slavery would then have become too great, and the institution would have collapsed.

This is getting out of hand. It’s all about what offends others. Grow up and put your big girl and big boy panties on. There will always be things that offend us. Face it, and unless they are physically harming you get over it and move on.
