Legislation In Michigan Protecting K9s

Belding, MI – A 20-year-old man in Michigan has taken great measure to push for harsher laws toward offenses against K-9 Officers.  Chance Vogel, a Texas native has been working on legislation dubbed “Nicky’s Law,” in honor of fallen K-9 Officer Nicky of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.

Inspired by his love for K-9’s, Chance Vogel has hopes to one day be a K-9 Officer.  Vogel has worked diligently to build relationship and awareness for the K-9 community.  He recently became the President of the “Eastern & Midwest Chapter of Vesting America’s Police K-9’s.”  Over the last year Vogel has raised enough money to fund the vesting of five K-9’s.  A sixth K-9 Officer will be vested in February of 2017.  The vests that are purchased come from Bullet Block out of Boston, MA. and are American made.  They are sold to the organization through Tread Armament & Weaponry at a discounted rate of $800.  The vests are NIJ certified for level IIIA, which means they can stop up to a .44 mag at point blank range and up to a 4″ blade.

The new legislation that Vogel has helped author will cover K-9’s on a new level.  Nicky’s Law will cover assaulting, maiming, harassing and killing a K-9, protecting county, city, and state K-9 Officers.  It will be the first federal law that protects K-9’s, according to office of Michigan Senator Gary Peters.  Peters, along with Senator Debbie Stabenow and Congressman Justin Amash have all communicated with Vogel on the legislation.  The new penalties for breaking the law could result in a felony with up to 25 years in prison, a minimum of a $5,000 fine, up to five years probation and a required registration on a new registry.  The registry would be the “National Law Enforcement Safety Registry” and would track all offenders through a national database.

Officerdown.us just partnered with Vesting America’s K-9’s and started a campaign to eliminate their current waiting list.  Their collective goal is $34,400 which will vest an additional 18 Officers immediately.  To be a part of protecting these K-9’s you can visit Officer Down here.
