Folcroft Borough Police Officer shot in ambush

Friday morning at around 10 AM, a Folcroft Borough police officer was responding to the area of Primos and Elmwood steets for possible drug activity. The officer was ambushed and shot multiple times. The officer had not been identified, but the officer is 26-years-old and has been on the department for just over a year. The officer was shot multiple times and is in critical condition. At this time there is a person of interest in custody.

WPVI News in Pennsylvania reports:

Action News has learned that the 26-year-old officer was responding to a report of drug activity in the area. The officer was ambushed and struck by gunfire multiple times, according to sources.

One nearby resident told Action News he was standing near an open window when he heard three rapid gunshots. There was a short pause, followed by four rapid shots.

Police have a massive manhunt underway in search of the gunman. Activity has focused on a residential area adjacent to the Folcroft rail station. Officers in an armored vehicle were spotted on the scene.

Federal authorities, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, are on the scene.

Service on SEPTA’s Wilmington/Newark Line is suspended until further notice due to the police activity between Folcroft and Glenolden stations.

Amtrak train service has stopped just south of Philadelphia, with two trains near Folcroft stopped: a Northeast Regional train and an Acela train.

This is yet another reminder of the dangers that we can face on any call we go to. We know any call could be the one. Always get backup or wait for backup if you can. Tombstone courage can get you killed; it’s not worth the risk. Double up or ride together if you can. We know it’s not always possible, there will always be calls you have to run by yourself. Keep your head on a swivel, watch your six, go home at the end of your shift.
